Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah, is an American actress, rapper, and singer. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and performer. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita, a teacher of Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she was 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school in Newark NJ and was educated by her family's Baptist Church. Latifah was her stage name when she was eight years old. It means fragile in Arabic. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah is one of the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah after hearing the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
